Submission isn’t for wimps.

The decision to willfully surrender your agenda to the bigger calling of unity and team building is what makes church life effective and fulfilling. Here’s a profound truth. Leadership goes first. That’s difference between followers and leaders. We in leadership must lead by example by structuring our lives to be transparent and quick to adjust our way so others will see that we are just fellow travelers and the real leader is Christ.

We take ourselves too seriously and miss taking serious enough the true calling of surrender to Christ and His way. This E-sanctuary is to be a safe place of open dialog from various leadership types who are willing to help us all learn from the different experiences as we go along this road. This journey we embark on will be enriched by contributions that you- the faithful church leadership- make to this online spiritual think tank. God bless you and let us hear your hearts!

I found the session on the 11th to be quite exciting. Coming from leadership in another church I can compare and contrast some of the significant differences in operation and outcomes of the CEO model and the shared leadership model.

I supervise either directly or indirectly 26 people on a daily basis. I was struck by how I can improve the outcomes of my leadership in my secular work with these same principles.

I will try to post specific examples of the application of the principles and the results.

Keep going with this. It is desperately needed.

Something I find personally challenging in a shared leadership model is to NOT have the answers. In other words, in my work life, I may establish a work group of representatives from each campus in the state to solve a problem. I can VERY EASILY get into the trap of feeling like I have to come to the first meeting with a proposed solution already in hand to demonstrate that I understand the problem and have the requisite skills and knowledge that I assume the others expect from me as a leader. If I don't, I assume others will think less of my capabilities. However, I have had recent experiences where I did not have any idea of how to solve the problem and found that the results of the meeting were:

1. A workable solution that was built upon concensus.
2. All members of the work group felt empowered and that they were heard.
3. Willingness/eagerness of work group members to act on the results.

What was perhaps more stiking was my inability to be comfortable with the results. What I mean by this is that several of my staff who attended the meetings commented on how this was probably the best inter-institutional work group meeting they had been involved with in their 15 year work history. I was totally oblivious of this and still struggle seeing it. I trust that their observations are accurate but believe that I need "internal work" to be done within myself to fully embrace the shared leadership model. Pride, self-esteem, and fear all operate to keep me from the full potential of shared leadership in my daily life.

I am revisiting the potters wheel and how soft I really am under the hand of my master. This is easier said than done and we need life sometimes to soften the clay and make us become his creation.I watched last night a person with a severe physical problem wow the judges in a talent contest. He said his gift was developed as a result of needing a place to go that would bring him peace. He flew an indoor kite with beauty and grace that calmed the whole crowd watching. Maybe my life could somehow have the impact of Jesus if I allowed him to shape me.
